Thursday, March 27th, 2008Online poker is full of fish
Thursday, March 27th, 2008It is amazing how absolutely diverse online poker players are. You can find players of all levels on poker sites. You typically won’t start to reach a majority of great players until you get to the higher limit tables. Even then, you may find some rich bored guy who is capable, able and willing to give up a lot of his chips. When you clash with a variety of playing styles, you must play with extreme caution. You must play extremely tight and practice discretion. Yu can be quite profitable on these tables, but patience is key. When you get an above average starting hand like ace king suited, you must narrow the field before a flop, but be disciplined enough to let the hand go quickly if it doesn’t hit. After all, even a pair of two’s can beat you if the flop misses.
How do you handle that situation? Consider folding and hiding under your pillow. You probably aren’t up against AA or KK when there are five callers in the pot. You are most likely up against hands like king queen, ace jack, pocket eights, etc. The problem is that it’s so easy to get outdrawn with a bunch of players in the pot.
You really don’t want to slow play premium hands either, because you are just inviting more fish to take a stab at the pot. The best strategy is to play sound poker. The late position is your buddy and keep him close to you. Pocket pairs can be a killer and they are some good hands hands you want to play with a lot of callers. Flop a set and you are in heaven with a rainbow flop result.
Suited connectors can do well also, but it’s just a matter of how many chips are in the pot to justify your call or push. Early in tournaments it’s usually best to see the flop before you push. There is no pressure and if your AQ misses, you can get out of the hand with most of your chips still left.
AQ and AJ just don’t hold up that well in online poker. So many fish will play any ace hand and if they hit two pair you are dead in the water post flop. A great weapon is the medium pocket pair. Hit the set post flop and you can really tear down the house. Many nut jobs will do their best to bluff and push on the pot this is your opportunity to put them in their place.
Don’t bring a knife to a gun fight. There is a certain belief that online poker is rigged. Some believe that there are poker stars hacks. The bottom line is that everyone gets their fair share of good hands and bad. Keep your timing right and you can make these poker stars reload their account like an ATM machine.
Look for the fish who is pushing a lot of hands. When the timing is right and you have a great premium hand considering calling his all in and punishing him to the max. Make these dream pokerstars reload. Once you gain a certain level of respect at the table and knockout a few dingnobs, other players will think twice about re-raising you all in, or pushing with junk.
The key to online and plain poker in general is to always keep them guessing. Timing is vital. Make players fold when you are bluffing and call when you have the nuts. Practice does make perfect. The aggressive do gain many riches. Play your cards right and you too can become a poker Stars cheat.
Learn to Play Agressive Winning Texas Holdem Poker
Thursday, March 27th, 2008Playing an aggressive style of texas holdem poker is what gets a lot of players into big trouble, causing them to lose their entire bankroll before they even know what happened. But that’s because they don’t have a plan. Being aggressive in texas holdem is a key to being a winning poker player. But you have to know how to be aggressive if you[‘re going to make it work and win.
Some players are what we call loose-aggressive in their style of play. They may win big occasionally but long term they are not going to be successful texas holdem poker players. Not against top players, anyway.
The loose-aggressive hold em player is aggressive too often to where he’s being more reckless than he is aggressive. And this is what gets him in trouble.
The lose-aggressive poker player will raise and rerais with hands like 2-9 offsuit. While there may be an appropriate time to bluff with a (non) hand like this, the loose-aggressive poker player does this all the time. He may bluff down some pots, but more often than not, he’ll lose big.
So how do you win playing aggressive texas holdem? By playing a tight-aggressive style of texas holdem. Tight-aggressive players don’t play that many hands and they usually have a decent starting hand.
This allows them to play aggressively when they do play, usually forcing other players out of a pot because they know the tight-aggressive player has a hand a lot more often than not. Which also allows for the occasional and effective bluff.
Aggression also means raising when you do play a pot. If you call, you have one way to win a hand and that’s by having a better hand. And yet pocket aces, the top starting hand in texas holdem, still loses 20% of the time.
However, if you raise, which costs you only one more bet, you double the ways you can win the hand. Now the pressure is on your opponent, who must decide whether to call you or fold.
Position also can determine when to be aggressive. Let me use an example of a hand I recently played. I didn’t do anything special but it’s a good example of how aggression can win a hand.
I was on the button (the dealer position). Everyone folded to me, leaving myself and the two blinds after me. I had A-5 offsuit. This is a hand I’d muck 95% of the time.
However, everyone had already folded to me so I decided to play it. Even though it was a non-starting hand, I didn’t just call the big blind. I raised it. Why? If I called, the small blind only had to call half a bet and the big blind would see the flop for free (since the big blind already had one bet in).
Raising would cost me only one more bet and would put the decision to the blinds. I raised and both the small and big blind folded. If I had just called, I would’ve had at least the big blind in the hand and there was a good chance I did not have the better cards.
Understanding the role aggression can play in your texas holdem game will really improve your overall poker results.
